Fathers of the Mission de Alcala

Father Junipero Serra founded the Mission San Diego de Alcala. He was beatified September 25th, 1988 by St. John Paul II, on September 23, 2015 he was canonized by Pope Francis. Father Serra was born to poor parents who sent him to a Franciscan school where he was recommended to become a father. At the age of 24 he became professor of theology and taught for five years and Spanish Universities. In 1749 he traveled to Mexico where he became a missionary living alongside the Indians he also became the administrator of the College of San Fernando. In 1767 when the Jesuits were removed from the New World Serra was chosen was to administer to the missions that had been built in Baja California, and in 1769 he was chosen to go to Alta California to found missions. Father Junipero Serra practived mortification of the flesh and would wear shirts with barbs, self-flagellate himself, and self burn himself in order to purify his soul.

Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen succeeded Father Serra as president of the mission in 1784
