Mission San Diego de Alcala
On Sunday, July 16, 1769 Fathers Junipero Serra, Juan Viscaino, and Fernando Parron raised and bleeses a cross to establish Alta California's 1st mission. Relocated from Presidio Hill to this site in August 1774 the mission was the mother of those founded in California by the Franciscan Order. The present buildings, first completed in 1813, were rebuilt in stages from 1915 to 1931 after many years of deterioration they have been in use as a parish church since February 1941.

Originally registered June 10, 1936 plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Diocese of San Diego and Squibob Chapter, E Clampus Vitus, Sunday, July 16, 1989

Entering the garden area is a plaque dedicated to the Indians.


The plaque reads:

Bell Tower Shrine - the sign reads "Bell Tower Shrine - Pause for a quiet prayer"


A brick cross stands in a garden dedicated to the Native Americans.

The inside of the Chapel. The eagle on the throne (in the photo below) signifies strength and victory and is a symbol of resurrection.


A plaque on the wall in the Chapel reads:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF COUNTESS BERNADINE MURPHY DONOHUE THE CHAPEL CHOIR STALLS AND ALTAR ARE DEDICATED - SIR DANIEL J. DONOHUE ANNO DOMINE


Inside the chapel is a case with a priest vestment, worn during mass.


Two statues of Jesus can also be found in the chapel.



 A statue titled The Pieta: Thirteenth Station of the Cross (the 13th of the 14 places Jesus visited on his way to His death in Calvary.


San Diego - Ruega Por Nosotros, translated, "pray for us."



A sign opposite the statue gives the history of Saint Didacus.



Sign below the painting translated: The Villa Petra His famous son VP Fray Junipero Serra in the second centenary of the founding of the Mission San Diego de Alcala.


Cross dedicated to the memory of Father Luis Jayme


The plaque reads:
In Memory to Padre Luis Jaume - First California Marty who was killed Nov. 4, 1776 by Indians on this spot. Erected and dedicated Sept. 9, 1924 by Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West
